Quick answer

Business Class flights to Edmonton from the UK start from £1,749 return. There is no nonstop — no British airline flies to Edmonton, though Air Canada and Wardair both did until 1989. You connect either through Calgary, which has two UK carriers from Heathrow, or through Amsterdam on KLM. London departures should take Calgary; regional departures should take Amsterdam.

About Edmonton

In 1989, Wardair Canada flew scheduled nonstops from Edmonton to London Gatwick and Manchester. Air Canada had flown Heathrow before that, with DC-8s in 1970 and TriStars in 1983. Today Edmonton has no UK service at all, and its only European link is a KLM flight to Amsterdam.

Business Class starts from £1,749 return, and it carries one of the lowest First Class fares in our entire programme. Every journey connects. The rest of the country sits under Business Class flights to Canada, and the wider programme under Business Class flights from the UK.

There is no direct flight from the UK to Edmonton

We read Edmonton International's own airlines-and-destinations listing in full. No British city appears on it and no British airline appears on it.

The airport's own record is unusually detailed about what used to be there. Air Canada operated nonstop service to London Heathrow with DC-8 jets in 1970 and L-1011 TriStar aircraft in 1983. Canadian Pacific Airlines flew Amsterdam with DC-8s in 1976 and later 747s. And Wardair Canada operated scheduled nonstop service to London Gatwick and Manchester in 1989, alongside charters to other UK cities. LOT Polish Airlines flew Warsaw until 2001.

That is a considerable amount of lost transatlantic service, and it is worth stating because it explains something the current timetable does not: Edmonton is not a city that never had European links. It had several, across several decades, and they went.

One European route, and it is not British

Edmonton's current international network is dominated by the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean. Its single European link is KLM to Amsterdam, which carried 111,541 passengers in 2024.

That is the only international destination on the airport's record with a published passenger figure, which tells you something about how the airport's traffic is distributed — the rest of its international flying is North American and leisure-oriented rather than long-haul.

For a British traveller the Amsterdam link is a genuine option rather than a curiosity, because Amsterdam is reachable from a very wide range of UK airports. It is one of the two realistic routings and we price it alongside the other.

Calgary or Amsterdam?

Those are the two sensible ways to reach Edmonton from Britain, and they suit different travellers.

RoutingHow it worksBest for
Via CalgaryHeathrow nonstop on Air Canada or WestJet, then a short domestic hopLondon departures
Via AmsterdamShort hop to Amsterdam, then KLM's nonstopRegional departures
Via Toronto or VancouverNonstop to either, then a domestic sectorWorth pricing if the timings suit

Calgary is the obvious answer from London. Two airlines fly it nonstop from Heathrow, and Edmonton is a short domestic hop away — you cross the Atlantic in one go and finish with a flight of well under two hours.

Amsterdam is the obvious answer from everywhere else. Amsterdam is reachable nonstop from far more British airports than Calgary is, so a traveller in Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow or Newcastle can make the whole journey in two sectors without first getting to Heathrow.

That is an unusually clean split and it is why we would not quote either without asking where you are starting from. Business Class flights to Calgary covers the first sector of the Canadian routing in detail.

One caution on the Amsterdam option. KLM's Edmonton service is a single route rather than a bank of them, so if it is disrupted the alternatives are limited. A Calgary routing has two UK carriers behind it and a frequent domestic connection, which is more resilient even though it is longer for a regional traveller.

Business Class to Edmonton from each UK airport

UK departureBusiness Class fromMost likely routing

Manchester£1,845Via Amsterdam
Birmingham£1,914Via Amsterdam
Newcastle£1,967Via Amsterdam
Glasgow£2,015Via Amsterdam

Per passenger, return. Excl. taxes and carrier charges. Subject to availability.

London is the cheapest departure by a clear margin, and the fare rises steadily the further north you go. That is the conventional pattern and it is worth noting because several destinations in our programme invert it.

Since nobody gets a nonstop to Edmonton, the question is not whether to accept a connection — you are accepting one either way. It is which connection, and whether the London saving covers the cost of reaching London.

Glasgow is the dearest of the five. From Scotland it is worth asking us to price a London departure alongside, because the gap is wide enough to cover a domestic connection and still leave something over.

How much is Business Class to Edmonton from the UK?

Business Class to Edmonton starts from £1,749 return per passenger and subject to availability. Other cabins on the same route: Economy from £556, Premium Economy flights from the UK from £1,014, and First Class flights from the UK from £2,469.

Premium Economy sits at a little under six tenths of the Business fare — a conventional gap and a real saving. The Economy fare is low for a journey of this length, so the ladder from the back of the aircraft is long.

One of the lowest First Class fares we sell

DestinationBusiness Class fromFirst Class from
Edmonton£1,749£2,469 — joint lowest in the programme
Detroit£1,749£2,469
Denver£1,749£2,469
Calgary£1,914£2,883

Edmonton shares the lowest First Class fare in our entire programme with Detroit and Denver — the three are identical. Against a Business Class fare that is itself low, that produces a step up of around forty per cent, which is at the narrow end of what we sell.

The caveat is the one that always applies to a connecting destination, and here it matters more than usual. The cabin applies to the long sector only. Whether you route through Calgary or Amsterdam, the final leg into Edmonton is a shorter flight on a different aircraft, and no ticket wording changes that.

So the arithmetic is attractive and the product is partial. We will price it if you want it and we will tell you exactly which sector it covers.

Where Edmonton sits among the Canadian destinations we sell

DestinationBusiness Class fromFirst Class fromUK nonstop?
Ottawa£1,649£2,869Yes
Edmonton£1,749£2,469No
Toronto£1,847£2,925Yes
Vancouver£1,847£3,225Yes
Calgary£1,914£2,883Yes
Montreal£2,349£4,869Yes

Two things stand out, and the second is the more useful one.

In Business, Edmonton is the second cheapest Canadian destination we sell — only Ottawa is lower, and Ottawa has a Heathrow nonstop. So you are paying slightly less than Toronto or Vancouver for a journey that has a connection in it. That is a fair trade rather than a bargain.

In First, Edmonton is comfortably the cheapest in Canada, and by a wide enough margin that it changes the decision. The next lowest Canadian First fare is Ottawa's, several hundred pounds above it, and Montreal's is nearly twice Edmonton's. That also gives Edmonton the narrowest step from Business up to First of any Canadian destination on our books.

If you have ever looked at a First Class fare to Canada and put it straight back down, this is the one to look at again. The qualification stands — it covers the long sector, not the hop — but the number is genuinely unlike the rest of the Canadian ladder.

What the whole journey costs, not just the flight

The published fare is the transatlantic part. On a connecting destination it is worth thinking about the rest before you compare departures.

From London. The fare is the lowest of the five, you take the Heathrow nonstop to Calgary and finish with a short domestic sector. If you live in or near London, this is the cheapest fare and the shortest journey at the same time, which is not a combination you always get.

From Manchester, Birmingham or Newcastle. The fare is a little higher, but the Amsterdam routing means two sectors from your own airport with nothing to add. Compare that against a London fare plus getting yourself to Heathrow with enough margin to be relaxed about it, and the regional fare frequently comes out ahead on both money and time.

From Glasgow. The widest gap to London of the five. Price both. The Amsterdam routing still gives you two sectors from home, but the saving on a London departure is large enough that it deserves a proper look rather than an assumption.

For a business traveller. Weigh the resilience point rather than the fare. If the trip has a fixed commitment at the far end, the Calgary routing has two UK carriers and a frequent domestic connection behind it, which matters more than the difference between these fares.

Seven hours behind

Edmonton is seven hours behind the UK, and that gap stays constant through the year because Alberta observes daylight saving as Britain does.

The two countries do not switch on precisely the same dates, so there are short windows each spring and autumn when the difference is an hour out. It catches standing meetings more than flights, but it is worth a glance at the calendar if your dates fall near the end of March or the end of October.

Seven hours is a substantial shift with very little usable overlap with a British working day. An Edmonton morning is a British late afternoon, so the window in which both ends are awake is narrow and sits at the end of the UK day.

Westbound you gain the hours and land with a long day still in front of you, though on a connecting itinerary you will have been travelling for most of it. Eastbound you lose them on an overnight, which is the harder half and the sector the cabin is really for.

How long does the journey take?

We did not sample a block time for Edmonton and will not publish one we did not see.

What we can describe is the structure, which is what determines your day. Both routings are a long transatlantic sector plus a connection: via Calgary the second leg is a short domestic hop; via Amsterdam the first leg is the short one and the transatlantic crossing comes second.

That difference matters more than the totals. The Calgary shape puts the short flight at the end, when you are tired but nearly there. The Amsterdam shape puts it at the beginning, which means the long sector is the last thing you do — arguably the better order if you can sleep on aeroplanes and the worse one if you cannot.

Leave a generous connection either way. On a route where the onward options are limited, a missed link is not a two-hour wait.

Business Class, First Class or Premium Economy?

CabinFromThe case for it
Economy£556Low for the distance — a wide step up
Premium Economy£1,014A little under six tenths of Business — a real saving
Business Class£1,749The overnight return on a journey with a connection in it
First Class£2,469Joint lowest First Class fare in the programme

The case for Business is stronger on a connecting itinerary than on a nonstop, because you arrive at the far end having already spent a day travelling — the quality of the long sector matters more rather than less when it is not the whole journey.

Premium Economy is a genuine saving here and the gap is conventional. Westbound in daylight it is a defensible choice.

First Class is worth a look on this route in a way it is not on most, purely because of where the fare sits. Just be clear about what you are buying: the long sector, not the hop.

Entry requirements for Canada

  • You need an eTA to fly to Canada — an Electronic Travel Authorisation. For short stays of up to six months it is what applies rather than a visa.
  • You also need an eTA to transit through Canada by air, even without leaving the airport.
  • You do not need one arriving by land or sea.
  • Your passport must be valid for the length of your planned stay. If you are connecting through other countries, many require six months.
  • Border officials may ask for proof of a return ticket and sufficient funds.
  • Children travelling alone or with one parent need a letter of consent from the non-travelling parents or guardians.

If you have a criminal record or have been arrested, contact the Canadian High Commission before you travel. It may affect whether you are allowed to enter, and establishing admissibility is a process rather than a form — not something to leave until the week of departure.

One point specific to the Calgary routing: you clear Canadian immigration at Calgary rather than at Edmonton, because the onward leg is domestic. Build the connection around that queue rather than around the minimum the system offers.

One ticket or two?

Every Edmonton itinerary has a connection in it, which makes this the most important practical question here.

If a flight is delayedOne through ticketTwo separate bookings
Getting you to EdmontonThe airline's problemYours, at your own cost
Minimum connectionProtectedWhatever you guessed
BagsUsually checked throughCollect and re-check
Missing the onward sectorRebooked, usually with a hotelA new fare and a room you pay for

On the Amsterdam routing there is a further consideration: a short European hop and a transatlantic crossing bought separately have no relationship at all, and a delay on the first leaves you with a long-haul ticket you cannot use. We price it as one journey by default.

Arriving, and the first hours on the ground

A few practical points, because a seven-hour westbound shift after a connecting journey is a particular kind of arrival.

You will have been travelling most of the day and your body will insist it is late evening whatever the clock says. The standard advice applies and it works: stay up to local bedtime rather than sleeping on arrival, and the second day is dramatically better than it would otherwise be.

Edmonton is a mid-sized airport rather than a major hub, so the arrivals process is quick — and if you routed through Calgary you will already have cleared Canadian immigration there, making the Edmonton arrival effectively a domestic one.

Do not book anything demanding for arrival day. A transatlantic crossing, a connection and a seven-hour shift is not a schedule that leaves much in reserve.

Who this destination suits, and who it does not

We would rather set this out plainly than let you find it after booking.

It suits you if Edmonton or northern Alberta is genuinely where you are going. The journey is long but the structure is sound, there are two independent routings to work with, and the fares — particularly in First — sit at the friendly end of our programme.

It suits you particularly if you are departing from outside London, because the Amsterdam routing gives you two sectors from your own airport rather than a domestic leg to Heathrow first.

It suits you less if your schedule has no slack in it. Two sectors with limited alternatives on either routing is not a journey that recovers quickly from a disruption.

It also suits you less if Alberta generally is the destination and the city is open, because Calgary has a two-airline nonstop and would save you the connection entirely.

What to settle before you ask for a quote

  • Where are you starting from? London points to Calgary; anywhere else points to Amsterdam. It is the first question here.
  • Is Edmonton the destination, or is Alberta? If the city is open, Calgary is direct from Heathrow.
  • Have you looked at the First Class fare? It is the joint lowest in our programme — just remember it covers the long sector only.
  • Do you have your eTA? Needed to fly and also to transit Canada by air.
  • Any criminal record, or children travelling with one parent? Both need sorting out before departure.

How to pay less to Edmonton

01

Be flexible with your dates

Business Class availability to Edmonton is sold in limited buckets, so moving a departure or return by a day or two can change which fares are open to you.

02

Compare more than one UK airport

We hold fares from 5 UK departure points to Edmonton, and they are not the same. Tell us which airports you can realistically use and we will compare them together.

03

Compare the whole itinerary, not the headline price

Two fares to Edmonton at a similar price can differ on connection time, total journey time, cabin on each sector, baggage and how the ticket can be changed.

04

Check the connection carefully

A lower fare with a very long layover, an overnight wait or a change of terminal may not be better value than a slightly higher fare with a shorter, simpler connection.

05

Ask what the fare rules allow

If your plans could move, ask about change and cancellation conditions before you book. Flexibility is part of the price, and it is worth pricing deliberately.

Edmonton questions

Business Class to Edmonton starts from £1,749 return per passenger, excluding taxes and carrier charges and subject to availability. Other cabins on the same route: Economy from £556, Premium Economy from £1,014 and First Class from £2,469.

No. No British airline flies to Edmonton and no British city appears on the airport's destination list. Every journey from the UK connects, either through Calgary or through Amsterdam.

Yes, and more than one. Air Canada flew nonstop to London Heathrow with DC-8s in 1970 and TriStars in 1983, and Wardair Canada operated scheduled nonstops to London Gatwick and Manchester in 1989. All of it has gone.

One — Amsterdam, with KLM. It carried 111,541 passengers in 2024 and is the airport's only European link. The rest of Edmonton's international network is North American and Caribbean.

It depends entirely on where you start. From London, Calgary — two airlines fly it nonstop from Heathrow and Edmonton is a short hop beyond. From anywhere else in Britain, Amsterdam, because it is reachable nonstop from far more UK airports.

London at £1,749, then Manchester £1,845, Birmingham £1,914, Newcastle £1,967 and Glasgow £2,015. London is cheapest by a clear margin and the fare rises steadily the further north you go.

It carries one specific limitation. KLM's Edmonton service is a single route rather than a bank of them, so if it is disrupted the alternatives are limited. A Calgary routing has two UK carriers behind it and a frequent domestic connection, which is more resilient.

No, and this matters here more than on most routes. The cabin applies to the long transatlantic sector. Whether you go via Calgary or Amsterdam, one leg is a shorter flight on a different aircraft, and no ticket wording changes that.

The arithmetic is unusually good. Edmonton shares the lowest First Class fare in our entire programme with Detroit and Denver, and the step up from Business is around forty per cent, which is at the narrow end of what we sell. Just be clear it covers the long sector only.

Yes. It sits at a little under six tenths of the Business fare — a conventional gap and a real saving. Westbound in daylight it is a defensible choice.

Ask us to price both. Glasgow is the dearest of the five departures and the gap to London is wide enough to cover a domestic connection and still leave something over. That said, the Amsterdam routing from Glasgow keeps you to two sectors, which has its own value.

We did not sample a block time and will not publish one we did not see. What we can tell you is the structure: both routings are a long transatlantic sector plus a connection, with the short leg at the end via Calgary and at the beginning via Amsterdam.

Seven hours behind, constant through the year because Alberta observes daylight saving as Britain does. The two do not switch on precisely the same dates, so there are short windows each spring and autumn when it is an hour out.

Only narrowly. Seven hours leaves very little usable overlap — an Edmonton morning is a British late afternoon, so the window in which both ends are awake sits at the end of the UK day.

Yes, to fly. Most visitors need either a visa or an eTA but not both, and for short stays of up to six months the eTA is what applies. You do not need one arriving by land or sea.

Yes. An eTA is required to transit through Canada by air even if you are not leaving the airport. On the Calgary routing that is exactly what you are doing on the way in, so it applies either way.

At Calgary, because the onward leg into Edmonton is domestic. Build your connection around that queue rather than around the minimum the booking system offers.

Contact the Canadian High Commission before you travel, because it may affect whether you are allowed to enter. Establishing admissibility is a process rather than a form, so it is not something to leave until the week of departure.

Yes. Children travelling alone, or with only one parent, need a letter of consent from the non-travelling parents or guardians. It is a specific document rather than a general expectation, and it is checked.

Your passport must be valid for the length of your planned stay. If you are connecting through other countries — and on this route you are — many of them require six months.

Yes, and on this route the argument is close to overwhelming. Every Edmonton itinerary has a connection in it, so the only question is who carries the risk when a flight slips. On one ticket it is the airline; on two it is you, at your own cost.

If Edmonton is genuinely where you are going, Edmonton. If the destination is Alberta generally and the city is open, Calgary has a two-airline nonstop from Heathrow and would save you the connection entirely.

A quick one. It is a mid-sized airport rather than a major hub, and if you routed through Calgary you cleared Canadian immigration there, making the Edmonton arrival effectively domestic. Do not book anything demanding for arrival day.

Send us your dates, your nearest UK airport and who is travelling. We will price the Calgary and Amsterdam routings side by side, explain which sector any premium cabin actually covers, build the journey on one ticket rather than two, and say honestly if Calgary would give you a better trip.
