Quick answer
Newark is often quicker to midtown than JFK, and Boston is a different destination rather than a cheap way to reach Manhattan. On this route, buy business class for the overnight return rather than the daytime outbound.
Quick answer: For Manhattan, JFK and Newark are both viable and Newark is often quicker to midtown than people expect — the assumption that JFK is automatically the New York airport costs travellers time and money. Boston is a genuinely different destination rather than a New York alternative, and it is frequently the better arrival point for New England and parts of the north-east. All three are daytime westbound flights from the UK, which changes what business class is actually buying you.
The daytime flight problem
This route is different from almost every other long-haul market UK travellers use, and it changes the value calculation.
Flights from the UK to the US east coast are daytime westbound. You leave in the morning or early afternoon, you fly for seven to eight hours, and you arrive in the afternoon local time with the whole evening ahead of you. The cabin is lit. You are not going to sleep, and you should not try.
That matters because the flat bed — the single strongest argument for business class on most routes — is doing much less work here. You will use it as a very comfortable seat rather than a bed.
So what are you actually buying? Space to work properly for seven hours, a meal served when you want it, arriving without having been wedged in for the afternoon, and a lounge at Heathrow beforehand. Those are real benefits. They are just not the same benefit as arriving in Sydney having slept.
The return is the opposite. Eastbound flights to the UK are typically overnight, short, and brutal — you lose five hours and land in the morning. If you are going to buy business class in only one direction on this route, buy it coming home. That is the reverse of the advice for most other destinations, and it is the single most useful thing on this page.
JFK or Newark for New York?
The default assumption is JFK, and it is often wrong.
Newark (EWR)
Geographically closer to Manhattan than JFK, and for anyone heading to midtown or the west side the journey can be quicker — particularly outside peak traffic. Newark sits in New Jersey, which is the thing that makes travellers hesitate, but the state line is not a practical obstacle.
Newark is also the better arrival point if you are continuing into New Jersey, Pennsylvania or parts of upstate New York.
JFK
The larger international gateway with more carriers and more frequencies, so more choice of departure times and often more competitive business class fares. Better for anyone staying in Brooklyn, Queens or Long Island.
How to choose
Not by reputation, but by where you are actually going and how you will get there. Work out the ground transfer from each airport to your specific address, at the time of day you will land. That comparison, plus the fare and the departure time, should decide it.
Do not overlook the transfer cost either. Ground transport from either airport into Manhattan is a meaningful expense, and it is part of the price of the trip.
Boston is not a New York alternative
It gets grouped with New York in flight searches and it should not be.
Boston Logan (BOS) is a genuinely different destination and a compact, straightforward airport. It is close to the city — the transfer into central Boston is short by US standards — and it is the natural gateway for New England.
Where Boston is worth considering as an alternative is when your destination is in the north-east generally rather than New York specifically. Fares to Boston are sometimes lower, the airport is easier, and if your business or your holiday is in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire or Maine, arriving in Boston saves you a substantial onward journey.
What Boston is not is a cheaper way to reach Manhattan. The onward journey is several hours by road or rail and will erase any fare saving.
Entry requirements: arrange this early
UK travellers generally require authorisation before travelling to the United States, arranged in advance rather than on arrival, and passport requirements apply.
Requirements, eligibility and application routes change, and the rules differ depending on which British passport you hold and on your travel history. Check the current position on the GOV.UK foreign travel advice pages for the USA and apply through the official channel — there are many third-party sites charging a markup for the same thing.
Apply well ahead. Authorisation is usually quick but not guaranteed to be instant, and an airline will deny boarding without it regardless of what cabin you booked.
Working on the westbound flight
Since the outbound is a working day for a lot of travellers, it is worth setting it up properly rather than hoping.
Wi-Fi is fitted aircraft by aircraft rather than airline by airline, so if you genuinely need connectivity for those seven hours, check it for your specific flight rather than trusting the airline's general claim. Where it exists, transatlantic Wi-Fi is usually adequate for email and documents and unreliable for video calls.
Power is more consistent in business class, but bring the adapter you actually need rather than assuming. And if the work is genuinely important, download what you need before you board — the flight where connectivity fails is invariably the flight where you needed it.
One scheduling note: you land in the afternoon having worked all day and having lost no sleep, which makes an evening meeting or dinner on arrival day realistic on this route in a way it is not on most others.
Choosing your departure airport
The US east coast is one of the better-served long-haul markets from the UK, and not only from Heathrow.
Several carriers operate transatlantic services from Manchester and other UK airports, which for travellers outside the South East can remove a domestic connection entirely. Given the flight is only seven to eight hours, saving three hours of getting to Heathrow is proportionally a much bigger gain than it would be on a route to Australia.
Worth pricing your realistic departure options together rather than defaulting to London.
What business class gives you on this route
- A proper workspace. The most valuable feature on a daytime westbound flight. Seven uninterrupted hours with power, space and a table is a genuinely productive working day.
- The overnight return. Where the flat bed earns its money. A short eastbound overnight is punishing in a seat.
- Lounge access at Heathrow. Useful, and dependent on fare brand rather than cabin.
- Faster disembarkation and priority baggage. Meaningful at a busy US airport where arrival formalities take time.
- Baggage allowance. Set by fare brand, so check the figure on your booking.
Notice that lounge access and baggage depend on the fare brand, not the cabin — covered in our guide to business class fare types.
Arrival formalities
Allow time. US immigration and customs processing at a large east coast airport can take substantially longer than travellers expect, and business class does not change your position in that queue in any guaranteed way.
The practical consequences: do not schedule a meeting for shortly after your scheduled landing time, and if you have arranged a car, brief the driver that arrival time means wheels down rather than curbside. If you are connecting to a US domestic flight, allow a generous margin — you clear immigration and customs at your first US point of entry, then re-check bags and pass security again.
Which airport for which trip
Newark for midtown and the west side of Manhattan, for New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and when the fare or schedule is better.
JFK for Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island, when you want the widest choice of flights and times, and often for the most competitive business class fares.
Boston when your destination is New England, when you want a markedly easier airport, or when the fare is meaningfully lower and Boston works for your plans.
Current private fares and UK departure points are on our Business Class flights to New York and Boston pages, and Miami is worth a look if your plans are flexible on where in the US you land.
If your trip could reasonably be based in either New York or Boston, price both. It is one of the few long-haul markets where genuinely comparing two destinations is a sensible way to plan.
What we check on a UK to US east coast quote
- Whether the outbound needs business class at all, or whether the budget is better spent on the overnight return
- Realistic ground transfer time from each airport to the actual destination address
- Whether a regional UK departure removes a domestic connection
- The aircraft and cabin, particularly whether the layout is 1-2-1
- Fare brand: lounge access, baggage, seat selection and flexibility
- Connection margin where a US domestic sector follows
- That travel authorisation is arranged well before departure
We will happily quote business class one way and premium economy the other on this route, because on a daytime westbound flight that is frequently the better use of the money. It is not the biggest sale, but it is the honest recommendation.
Verify before you book
Schedules, aircraft and airport services on transatlantic routes change by season. Confirm the current schedule and cabin with the operating airline. Entry requirements for the United States are set by the US government and change — check GOV.UK foreign travel advice for the USA and apply through the official channel. For UK passenger rights on delays and cancellations, the Civil Aviation Authority is the correct reference.

JFK, Newark or Boston: Business Class to the US East Coast from the UK — FAQs
Prefer to talk? 786 262 0009 .
Is JFK or Newark better for Manhattan?
Newark is geographically closer to Manhattan and is often quicker to midtown and the west side, particularly outside peak traffic. JFK suits Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island and usually offers more flights and often more competitive fares. Compare the ground transfer to your actual address rather than choosing by reputation.
Should I buy business class to New York or on the way back?
On the way back. Westbound flights are daytime and you will not sleep, so the flat bed does much less work. The eastbound return is a short overnight where you lose five hours and land in the morning, which is punishing in a seat. This reverses the advice for most other long-haul routes.
Is Boston a cheaper way to get to New York?
No. The onward journey from Boston to Manhattan is several hours by road or rail and will erase any fare saving. Boston is worth choosing when your destination is New England, or when you want a markedly easier airport.
What is business class actually buying on a daytime transatlantic flight?
Space to work properly for seven hours with power and a table, a meal served when you want it, a lounge at Heathrow, and arriving without having been wedged in all afternoon. Those are real benefits, but they are not the same as arriving having slept.
Do UK travellers need authorisation to enter the United States?
Generally yes, arranged in advance rather than on arrival. Requirements and eligibility change and differ by British passport type and travel history. Check GOV.UK foreign travel advice for the USA and apply through the official channel rather than a third-party site charging a markup.
Which airport serves Boston?
Boston Logan International (BOS). It is compact, straightforward and close to the city, with a short transfer into central Boston by US standards, which makes it one of the easier US airports to arrive into.
How long do arrival formalities take in the US?
Often substantially longer than travellers expect at a large east coast airport, and business class does not guarantee a faster queue. Avoid scheduling a meeting shortly after your landing time, and brief any driver that arrival time means wheels down rather than curbside.
Can I fly business class to the US from a regional UK airport?
Yes, several carriers operate transatlantic services from Manchester and other UK airports. Because the flight is only seven to eight hours, saving three hours getting to Heathrow is proportionally a much bigger gain than on a route to Australia.
How much time do I need if I am connecting to a US domestic flight?
A generous margin. You clear immigration and customs at your first US point of entry, then re-check bags and pass through security again before the domestic flight, which takes considerably longer than a straightforward airside transfer.
Does business class include lounge access on transatlantic routes?
Usually, but it depends on your fare brand rather than your cabin. Cheaper business fare brands can exclude lounge access and reduce baggage allowance, so check the conditions attached to your specific fare.
