Everything you need to know

Written as the decision layer above the individual destinations.

Canada is one country and three quite different flights. Toronto (YTO), Montreal (YUL) and Ottawa (YOW) are eastern arrivals five hours behind the UK and among the shortest long-haul sectors we sell. Calgary (YYC) and Edmonton (YEG) are seven hours behind. Vancouver (YVR) is eight, and a materially longer flight. Choosing between them is not a preference — it changes the cabin decision.

Two things about our current fares are worth knowing before you start. As of 20 August 2026 the cheapest Canadian arrival we hold was Ottawa at £1,649 — the federal capital, not one of the big-city gateways. And the most expensive was Montreal at £2,349, roughly six hundred pounds above it, despite being the nearest major city to Ottawa.

Which Canadian city should you fly into?

Split the country in two first. Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa are eastern arrivals and short transatlantic sectors. Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton are western, considerably longer, and not sensibly reached by flying east and connecting domestically across the country.

Canadian Business Class fares compared

Six cities, six fares. These are our own from-prices, checked 20 August 2026 — a briefing to help you choose, not a live availability feed and not a savings claim against anyone else.

Vancouver Business ClassYVR£1,847£3,225
Calgary Business ClassYYC£1,914£2,883
Montreal Business ClassYUL£2,349£4,869

Notice that the order has very little to do with distance. Vancouver, the longest flight of the six, sits mid-table. Montreal, one of the shortest, is the most expensive. We list all six rather than quoting a single "from Canada" headline, because the city that suits your trip matters more than the lowest number on the board.

Ottawa and Montreal — six hundred pounds apart

This is the most useful thing on the page if your plans have any flexibility. Ottawa is our cheapest Canadian arrival and Montreal our most expensive, and the gap between them is around six hundred pounds in Business Class.

They are also the two Canadian cities in this group that sit closest to each other — both in eastern Ontario and Quebec, connected by a direct motorway route that a great many Canadians drive routinely rather than fly.

So if your trip is to Montreal but you could reasonably start it in Ottawa, or you are visiting both, it is worth asking us to price the pair. Check the drive for your dates and decide whether the saving is worth the journey — we will put both fares in front of you so you can judge it properly.

The same logic does not work in the west. Calgary and Edmonton are also a drivable pair, but the fare gap between them is far smaller, and Vancouver is nowhere near either.

Where London is not the cheapest departure

The standard advice — get yourself to Heathrow — is wrong on two of the four Canadian destinations where we hold per-origin fares, and one of them is wrong by a very large margin.

Ottawa is the striking one. Manchester is roughly £320 below London Heathrow. More than that, Ottawa has the widest origin spread of anything in this cluster: the Manchester fare and the Newcastle fare are around £1,000 apart — two airports in the north of England, on the same route, in the same cabin. If you are booking Ottawa, where you leave from is not a detail.

Montreal is cheapest from Birmingham, about a hundred pounds below London and roughly £200 below Glasgow or Newcastle.

London holds the advantage on Edmonton, and comfortably — around £100 below Manchester and £270 below Glasgow. On Calgary London is technically cheapest but by a single pound, which is a tie rather than a finding.

There is no regional rule of thumb to carry across this cluster, which is exactly why it is worth checking. Each destination lists the UK origins that actually carry its fare with the price against each one.

Calgary has the flattest fares we sell

Worth its own note, because it is unusual and it simplifies a decision. Across all five UK departure airports we price, the Calgary fare varies by under fifty pounds in total. Cheapest to dearest, the whole spread is smaller than the gap between two adjacent origins on most routes.

The practical consequence: on Calgary, fly from whichever airport is most convenient. The money you might save by travelling to a different UK airport will be swallowed by the cost and the hassle of getting there. That is rarely true on long-haul, and it is the opposite of the Ottawa picture above.

Where we hold per-origin fares, and where we do not

We would rather be straight about this than imply more precision than we have. On Ottawa, Edmonton, Calgary and Montreal we hold dated fares from five UK departure airports each, and those are the numbers behind everything above.

On Toronto and Vancouver we currently hold a from-price but not a per-origin breakdown. The published fare for each is a genuine dated figure; we simply are not in a position to publish what Glasgow or Newcastle costs for those two. Ask and we will price your specific departure airport and dates properly rather than showing you a number we cannot stand behind.

East, west, and whether you need the bed

We will give you the unhelpful-sounding but honest answer: on eastern Canada, Business Class is a genuine question rather than an obvious yes.

London to Toronto, Montreal or Ottawa is among the shortest long-haul sectors flown from the UK, the time difference is five hours, and the westbound leg is a daytime flight. If you are travelling out during the day and have a free evening at the other end, Premium Economy flights from the UK may be the better purchase. The eastbound overnight return is where the flat bed earns its money, because you land in the UK in the morning and lose the day otherwise.

Western Canada is a different calculation. Vancouver is eight hours behind and a considerably longer flight; Calgary and Edmonton are seven. At that distance the cabin does real work in both directions, and the time-zone recovery is genuine rather than theoretical.

Ask us to price the two directions separately. A mixed-cabin itinerary — the cheaper cabin out in daylight, the bed on the overnight return — is sometimes the sensible answer on eastern Canada, and most people never think to ask.

First Class to Canada

The step up from Business to First varies more across these six than the Business fares themselves do.

Edmonton carries the narrowest gap — First at roughly 1.4 times the Business fare, which is among the smallest steps anywhere in our range. Calgary is close behind at about 1.5 times, and Toronto around 1.6.

Montreal is the outlier at the other end, with First at well over twice the Business fare and the highest First price in the cluster by a wide margin. If First Class is something you would consider at the right number, Canada is a region where it is worth asking city by city rather than assuming — the answer is genuinely different at each end of this table. Our First Class flights from the UK overview covers what the cabin includes.

You need an eTA before you fly — and it covers transit too

This is the one piece of Canadian admin that catches British travellers out, and it is the reason people get turned away at a UK departure gate. Most British citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) to fly to Canada. UK government guidance puts it plainly: to enter or transit through Canada, most people need a visa or an eTA — not both.

The details worth knowing:

  • It costs CAD $7 and is applied for online, directly with the Canadian government.
  • It is valid for up to five years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. If you have one from a previous trip, check it is still tied to your current passport.
  • Most approvals arrive within minutes by email — but some take several days if you are asked for supporting documents. Do not leave it to the airport.
  • It applies to transit, not just arrival. If you are merely connecting through a Canadian airport on the way somewhere else, you still need one.
  • It is for air travel. Arriving by land or sea does not require an eTA, though you still need acceptable travel documents and ID.

On the passport itself, Canada is more relaxed than much of the Caribbean: your passport needs to be valid for the length of your planned stay, not six months beyond it. Short visits are normally visa-free for up to six months. That is a genuinely different rule from the ones on our Business Class flights to the Caribbean overview, where several countries do demand six months, so do not carry an assumption across from one trip to another.

Rules change without notice and we are a flight specialist rather than an immigration authority — check the official Canadian government eTA page and the GOV.UK Canada travel advice before you travel.

Toronto, YYZ and the metro code

Toronto is a multi-airport city. YYZ is Toronto Pearson, the main international arrival. YTO is the metro code covering the wider city area rather than a specific airport. Our Toronto fare is held against the metro code, which is why you will see YTO rather than YYZ against it.

If a fare quotes a metro code — ours or anyone else's — confirm which airport the ticket actually uses before you book. We do that in writing as a matter of course, because arriving at the wrong Toronto airport is an expensive and entirely avoidable mistake.

UK departure airports

London carries the widest Canadian choice, but as set out above it is not automatically the cheapest — Ottawa in particular is materially better from Manchester on our current fares, and Montreal from Birmingham.

Rather than publish a regional grid that would age badly, each destination lists the UK origins that actually carry its fare, with the price against each one. That is a real dated number rather than a claim about what is theoretically possible.

One practical caveat: a cheaper regional departure sometimes means a connection rather than a nonstop, and a connection costs time and adds risk that the fare does not show. We will put both in front of you and let you weigh them.

Booking a Canadian itinerary

Tell us the city, your UK airport — or airports, if you can use more than one — your dates and your cabin. On eastern Canada it is worth saying whether you would consider different cabins in each direction, because that is often where the sensible answer sits.

We will confirm the arrival airport in writing before you book, which on Toronto is not a formality. Bookings we ticket are ATOL protected where the scheme applies (ATOL Protected). If you would rather talk it through, call 07862 620009.

Canada Business Class FAQs

Questions for this overview. City-specific detail stays with each destination.

Do I need a visa or an eTA to fly to Canada?

Most British citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) to fly to Canada — UK government guidance says most people need a visa or an eTA, not both. It costs CAD $7, is applied for online with the Canadian government, and is valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Most approvals arrive within minutes by email, but some take several days if supporting documents are requested, so do not leave it to the airport.

Do I need an eTA if I am only connecting through a Canadian airport?

Yes. The eTA is required to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport, so a connection on the way somewhere else still needs one. It is an air-travel requirement — arriving by land or sea does not need an eTA, though you still need acceptable travel documents and ID.

Does my passport need six months validity for Canada?

No. Your passport needs to be valid for the length of your planned stay, not six months beyond it. Short visits are normally visa-free for up to six months. That is a more relaxed rule than several Caribbean countries apply, so do not carry an assumption across from a different trip.

Which Canadian city should I fly into from the UK?

Split the country in two first. Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa are eastern arrivals five hours behind the UK and among the shortest long-haul sectors we sell. Calgary and Edmonton are seven hours behind. Vancouver is eight and a materially longer flight. Toronto is the largest arrival and the Niagara gateway, Ottawa the federal capital, Montreal francophone Quebec, Calgary the usual arrival for Banff and the Rockies, Edmonton for Jasper and the energy sector, and Vancouver for the Pacific coast and Alaska cruises.

How much is Business Class to Canada from the UK?

It varies by city rather than by distance. As of 20 August 2026 our fares ran from Ottawa at £1,649 up to Montreal at £2,349, with Edmonton £1,749, Toronto £1,847, Vancouver £1,847 and Calgary £1,914 in between.

Which Canadian destination is cheapest in Business Class?

Ottawa, at £1,649 on our current fares — the federal capital rather than one of the big-city gateways, which surprises people. It is also the destination where your UK departure airport matters most: Manchester is roughly £320 below London Heathrow on it.

Why is Montreal so much more expensive than Ottawa?

On our current fares the gap is around six hundred pounds in Business Class, and the order has very little to do with distance — Montreal is one of the shortest sectors of the six and the most expensive. Ottawa and Montreal are the two cities in this group closest to each other, connected by a direct motorway route, so if your plans have any flexibility it is worth asking us to price both. We will not quote you a drive time we have not verified — check that yourself and decide whether the saving is worth the journey.

Is London the cheapest UK departure for Canada?

Not always. Ottawa is roughly £320 cheaper from Manchester than from London Heathrow, and Montreal is cheapest from Birmingham. London does hold a clear advantage on Edmonton, and on Calgary it is cheapest by a single pound, which is a tie rather than a finding. There is no rule of thumb to carry across the cluster.

Does my UK departure airport matter for Calgary?

Barely, and that is unusual. Across all five UK departure airports we price, the Calgary fare varies by under fifty pounds in total. Fly from whichever airport is most convenient — any saving from travelling to a different one will be swallowed by the cost and hassle of getting there. Ottawa is the opposite: its Manchester and Newcastle fares are around a thousand pounds apart.

Can you quote my local airport for Toronto or Vancouver?

Yes, but not from this overview. We currently hold a dated from-price for Toronto and Vancouver without a per-origin breakdown, so we are not in a position to publish what Glasgow or Newcastle costs on those two. Ask and we will price your specific departure airport and dates properly rather than showing you a number we cannot stand behind. On Ottawa, Edmonton, Calgary and Montreal we do publish fares from five UK airports each.

Is Business Class worth it to eastern Canada?

It is a genuine question rather than an obvious yes. London to Toronto, Montreal or Ottawa is among the shortest long-haul sectors from the UK, the time difference is five hours, and the westbound leg is a daytime flight. If you fly out during the day with a free evening at the other end, Premium Economy may be the better purchase. The eastbound overnight return is where the flat bed earns its money. Ask us to price the directions separately — a mixed-cabin itinerary is often the sensible answer and most people never think to ask.

Is Business Class worth it to western Canada?

The calculation changes. Vancouver is eight hours behind the UK and a considerably longer flight; Calgary and Edmonton are seven. At that distance the cabin does real work in both directions and the time-zone recovery is genuine rather than theoretical, so the case is much closer to a straightforward yes than it is on the eastern cities.

How much more is First Class than Business Class to Canada?

It varies more than the Business fares do. Edmonton carries the narrowest gap at roughly 1.4 times the Business fare, among the smallest steps anywhere in our range, with Calgary about 1.5 and Toronto around 1.6. Montreal is the outlier at well over twice, and the highest First price in the cluster by a wide margin. Worth asking city by city rather than assuming.

Will my Toronto flight land at Pearson?

Toronto is a multi-airport city. YYZ is Toronto Pearson, the main international arrival, while YTO is the metro code covering the wider city area rather than a specific airport — and our Toronto fare is held against the metro code, which is why you will see YTO against it. If a fare quotes a metro code, ours or anyone else own, confirm which airport the ticket actually uses before booking. We do that in writing as a matter of course.
