01 Lufthansa from the UK is always a Frankfurt or Munich connection
Lufthansa has no long-haul flights from the UK. Every Lufthansa business class ticket from Britain to the Americas, Asia or Africa is two flights: a short one to Frankfurt (FRA) or Munich (MUC), then the long-haul flight from there.
That shapes the whole decision. You are not choosing between Lufthansa and a nonstop; you are choosing a connecting journey, and it only makes sense when it gives you something a nonstop does not. Usually that is one of three things: a destination with no UK nonstop at all, a long-haul aircraft with a better seat than the nonstop carrier offers, or a departure from your own regional airport instead of a trip to Heathrow.
The two hubs are not interchangeable. Munich and Frankfurt run different long-haul networks and different aircraft, and the newest business seat is split between them: Munich has the Allegris Airbus A350-900s, Frankfurt the Allegris Boeing 787-9s. So the useful question is not "which airline", but "which hub flies my city, and on what aircraft".
If there is a nonstop from the UK to where you are going, we will price it next to the Lufthansa option. Sometimes the connection wins on seat or on price. Sometimes it simply adds a stop, and we will tell you so.
02 UK departure airports, and what business class means on the flight to Germany
Lufthansa's own route pages list London, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh for flights to both Frankfurt and Munich, with Glasgow and Jersey also listed for Munich. That regional spread is one of the strongest reasons to look at Lufthansa at all: you can start a long-haul business trip from your local airport, on one ticket, without getting to Heathrow first.
Be clear about what you are buying on that first flight. It is European Business, not a long-haul cabin:
- A standard short-haul seat, with the middle seat kept empty so you have room either side.
- Priority check-in, priority boarding and priority baggage.
- Lounge access before departure.
- A full meal on board, served on china.
- No flat bed. The bed comes on the long-haul flight.
Because both flights are on one ticket, a late first flight is Lufthansa's problem to solve, not yours. That protection is the practical difference between booking Lufthansa from Manchester or Edinburgh and making your own way to a London nonstop.
Timetables change with the season, and not every UK airport has several flights a day to both hubs. We check what actually flies on your dates and build the connection around it.
03 Allegris or the older 2-2-2 seat: the question that decides a Lufthansa booking
Lufthansa sells one long-haul business class, but in 2026 it flies two very different seats under that name. The gap between them is larger than at most airlines, because the older seat does not give everyone direct aisle access.
Allegris business
- On Munich-based Airbus A350-900s and Frankfurt-based Boeing 787-9s.
- Direct aisle access from every seat.
- Five seat types: the standard seat, a suite, an extra-space seat, a privacy seat and an extra-long bed.
- The special seat types are sold as a paid seat reservation; the standard seat is included.
- Seat heating and cooling, and a screen of up to 27 inches.
- Lufthansa says the layout varies by aircraft type.
The older business seat
- Still on most long-haul aircraft that have not had Allegris fitted.
- Lie-flat, usually in a 2-2-2 layout.
- The window passenger steps past the aisle passenger to get out.
- Less privacy and a tighter space for your feet than Allegris.
- A flat bed, but a clear generation behind.
Missing out on Allegris at Lufthansa costs you more than a nicer finish. On the older seat, a solo traveller at the window has a stranger between them and the aisle all night. If that matters to you, the aircraft on your flight number is the first thing to check.
The fleet is changing. Lufthansa's newer long-haul aircraft arrive with Allegris, and the Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing 777-9 are due to join with it. The Boeing 747-8 is being retrofitted in two phases: Allegris business goes into the lower deck first, while the upper deck keeps the older seat until a second phase planned for 2027–2028. So even a "retrofitted" 747-8 can put you in the older seat, depending on where you sit.
04 How to confirm you will get Allegris before you pay
Lufthansa publishes a list of Allegris destinations, and it describes that list as subject to change. A destination appearing on it tells you some flights have Allegris, not that yours will.
- Work from the long-haul flight number. The flight from the UK is always European Business, so ignore it for this purpose. The flight that matters is the one from Frankfurt or Munich.
- Check the aircraft type, then the version. An A350-900 from Munich or a 787-9 from Frankfurt is a good sign, but not every A350 has been fitted with Allegris. The type alone is not proof.
- Read the seat map. An Allegris cabin shows every seat with its own way to the aisle. A 2-2-2 block of seats means the older product.
- On a 747-8, check the deck. The lower and upper decks can carry different generations of seat on the same aircraft.
- Plan for a swap. Aircraft change for maintenance and disruption. Nobody can promise an airframe months ahead; we check the scheduled aircraft when you book and again closer to departure.
If you want one of the paid Allegris seat types, such as the suite, reserve it as early as you can. It is sold on top of the fare and there are only a few of each type per aircraft.
05 Lufthansa First Class from the UK: the long-haul flight only
Lufthansa First Class is a long-haul cabin sold on selected flights from Frankfurt and Munich. From the UK you buy it as a connecting trip, and we confirm the cabin on each flight before you pay, because the European flight is a different product from the long-haul flight.
The new Allegris First cabin is very small: two individual suites and one Suite Plus, which is built for two people and converts into a double bed. All three have floor-to-ceiling walls and closing doors. Lufthansa has launched it on A350-900s from Munich; the older First Class cabin still flies on other aircraft, including the 747-8.
If your First journey starts in Frankfurt, Lufthansa's First Class Terminal is open daily from 05:30 to 22:00 for passengers with a confirmed Lufthansa Group First Class flight that day, and it drives you across the apron to the aircraft. It is a separate building you arrive at by road, so it is designed for journeys beginning in Frankfurt rather than for a connection from a UK flight. We will tell you what applies to your itinerary.
06 Frankfurt and Munich on the ground: lounges and connections
Your connection is spent in a Lufthansa lounge. Lufthansa runs two main levels:
- Business Lounge — for business class passengers: a buffet that is served all day, showers, and seating by the windows.
- Senator Lounge — a quieter tier with a rest room, a working area and table dining, for travellers with Lufthansa's own top status or Star Alliance Gold and for First Class passengers.
In Frankfurt there is also a Welcome Lounge for passengers arriving on selected long-haul flights, with breakfast and showers. It is useful on the way home if you land early in the morning and have a wait before the flight back to the UK.
On connection time, allow more than the minimum. The European flight and the long-haul flight are on one ticket, so a missed connection will be rebooked, but a comfortable buffer at Frankfurt or Munich is much better than a rebooking on the next day's long-haul departure. With lounge access included, a longer wait costs you very little.
07 Star Alliance, Miles & More, and why Avios will not help
Lufthansa is a founding member of Star Alliance, which it joined in May 1997, and its own loyalty programme is Miles & More.
For many UK travellers, that is the first thing to know. Avios, the currency of British Airways and its oneworld partners, does not work with Lufthansa. If your points are in Avios, a Lufthansa trip earns you nothing there and cannot be paid for with them.
If you already collect with a Star Alliance airline, Lufthansa flights can usually be credited to that programme, and its status benefits generally carry across the alliance. How much you earn, and whether a redemption is available on your dates, depends on the programme and the fare you book, so check with that programme before relying on it.
What we will not do is tell you a Lufthansa booking is good value because of the miles. Miles are a small part of the decision. The seat on the long-haul flight and the total journey time matter far more.
08 Lufthansa against the airlines UK travellers usually compare it with
From the UK, Lufthansa usually competes with a British nonstop from London, or with a Gulf carrier connecting through its own hub. Here is how they compare.
| Lufthansa | British Airways | Virgin Atlantic | Qatar Airways | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shape from the UK | One stop, Frankfurt or Munich | Nonstop from London on many routes | Nonstop from the UK on its routes | One stop, Doha |
| First flight | European Business, middle seat kept free | Straight onto the long-haul aircraft | Straight onto the long-haul aircraft | Long-haul aircraft from the UK |
| Newest business seat | Allegris, on fitted aircraft only | Club Suite, on fitted aircraft only | Its newest Upper Class suite, on fitted aircraft only | Qsuite, on fitted aircraft only |
| Main risk | Older 2-2-2 seat with no aisle access at the window | Older Club World seat on some aircraft | Fewer destinations | Assuming every flight is Qsuite |
| Loyalty | Star Alliance · Miles & More | oneworld · Avios | SkyTeam · Virgin Points | oneworld · Avios |
Lufthansa is strongest when you start outside London, when your destination has no UK nonstop, or when the Allegris aircraft is on your flight and the nonstop alternative is an older seat. It is weakest when a good nonstop exists and the Lufthansa long-haul flight is on the older 2-2-2 seat: then you get an extra stop and a worse bed.
09 What a Lufthansa business class fare from the UK depends on
There is no single Lufthansa business class price. The fare comes from your UK airport, your final destination, the hub you connect through, your dates and the fare classes still open on both flights.
- Your dates. Moving a departure by a day or two often changes the fare more than anything else.
- Your UK airport. The same long-haul flight can be priced differently when it starts in London, Manchester or Edinburgh.
- Frankfurt or Munich. Where both hubs serve your city, one can be priced very differently from the other on the same day.
- The season at your destination. Peak periods push business class fares up sharply.
- How far ahead you book. Business fares do not reliably fall close to departure.
- Seat choice. The special Allegris seat types are charged as a seat reservation on top of the fare.
We do not quote a made-up starting figure or promise a percentage off Lufthansa's own price. Any fare we give you is one we can ticket on those dates. Bookings we ticket are ATOL protected where the scheme applies (ATOL Protected).
FAQ Lufthansa Business Class: your questions answered
These are the questions UK travellers actually ask us about Lufthansa. Every answer here also appears in here's structured data, word for word.
No. Lufthansa's UK flights go to Frankfurt or Munich, and its long-haul flights leave from there. Any Lufthansa business class trip from the UK to the Americas, Asia or Africa is a one-stop journey with a connection in Germany.
Allegris is Lufthansa's newer long-haul cabin. In business class it offers five seat types, from the standard seat to an enclosed suite and an extra-long bed, and every seat has direct aisle access. It flies on Munich-based Airbus A350-900s and Frankfurt-based Boeing 787-9s, with more aircraft types following.
It is a lie-flat seat, usually in a 2-2-2 layout, so passengers in the window seats have to step past their neighbour to reach the aisle. It still turns into a flat bed, but it has less privacy and less space than Allegris.
Check the aircraft on the long-haul flight number, not the route name, and look at the seat map for that flight. Lufthansa itself says its Allegris destination list is subject to change, and aircraft can be swapped, so we check the scheduled aircraft when you book and again nearer departure.
The standard Allegris business seat is included in the fare. Lufthansa sells the more private or more spacious seat types, such as the suite, as a paid seat reservation on top of the ticket.
The UK-to-Frankfurt or UK-to-Munich flight is European Business. The seat is a standard short-haul seat with the middle seat kept empty, and you get priority check-in, priority boarding, lounge access and a meal. It is not a flat bed; that comes on the long-haul flight.
Lufthansa lists London, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh for both Frankfurt and Munich, and also lists Glasgow and Jersey for Munich. Schedules change by season, so we confirm the flights for your dates.
Choose the hub that flies to your destination with the aircraft you want. Allegris A350-900s are based in Munich and Allegris 787-9s in Frankfurt, and the two hubs serve different long-haul destinations. For some cities only one hub has a nonstop flight at all.
Lufthansa First Class is sold on selected long-haul flights from Frankfurt and Munich, so a UK traveller buys it as a connecting trip. The Allegris First cabin has two private suites and a double Suite Plus, all with closing doors. We confirm the cabin on each flight in your itinerary before you pay.
Lufthansa is in Star Alliance, not oneworld, so Avios programmes are not its partners. Its own programme is Miles & More, and you can also earn with or redeem through other Star Alliance programmes, subject to each programme's rules and award availability.
Yes, and we build journeys that way by default. On one through ticket a delay is the responsibility of the airline and you are rebooked, usually with a hotel. On two separate bookings a missed connection is yours, at your own cost. Where splitting genuinely saves enough to be worth it, we will show you both and say plainly what risk you would be taking on.
We can tell you the scheduled aircraft and how stable that rotation has been, and we re-check closer to departure. What nobody can promise is that an aircraft is never substituted. On Lufthansa the difference that matters is the cabin you are picturing against the one that actually flies, so we confirm it in writing on the quote rather than leaving you to read a seat map.
Yes. If a nonstop on another carrier gets you there in less time, or a different airline is materially cheaper on your dates, we will say so even though it means not selling you Lufthansa. A booking that disappoints costs us more than a fare we did not write.
Your dates, your nearest UK airport, where you are going and who is travelling. Anything that constrains the trip helps too — a fixed meeting at the far end, a preference for a nonstop, or a specific cabin you have set your heart on. Call 07862 620009.
