United Polaris from the UK: which of the seven US hubs gets you the suite with a door?

United is a US hub airline: from Heathrow it flies nonstop to its own hubs, and anywhere else in America is a connection at one of them. Every long-haul United business seat is Polaris — flat, and with a way to the aisle that does not involve climbing over anyone. The new 787-9 suites with sliding doors and the paid-for Polaris Studio fly only a few London services so far, so we confirm the aircraft on your flight number before you pay.

United Airlines Business Class from the UK, in short

United Airlines business class from the UK is Polaris, flown nonstop from Heathrow Terminal 2 to seven United hubs: Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco and Washington Dulles. Every Polaris seat is lie-flat with direct aisle access. The newer 787-9 suites with sliding doors, plus eight Polaris Studio seats, fly San Francisco to London now and are scheduled for Houston to London from 5 January 2027. From Scotland, check the aircraft: the seasonal Glasgow flight carries no Polaris cabin. Call 07862 620009.

01 What you are really buying when you book United from the UK

United flies from London Heathrow nonstop to seven of its own US hubs: Chicago O'Hare, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco and Washington Dulles. If one of those is where you are going, you are buying a single transatlantic flight. If it is not, you are buying a flight to the hub and a domestic connection after it.

That split decides almost everything about the booking. A nonstop to San Francisco or Houston is judged on one aircraft. A trip to, say, a smaller US city is judged on two aircraft, a connection time, and the arrival formalities you clear at the first US airport you land in, before the onward flight. The domestic leg is usually a smaller aircraft with a different front cabin, which is normal for the distance but is not the Polaris bed.

United's hubs spread across the whole country, which is the carrier's real strength for a UK traveller: the East Coast through Newark and Washington, the middle of the country through Chicago, Denver and Houston, and the West Coast through San Francisco and Los Angeles. The skill is choosing the hub that gives you the shortest, most reliable second leg, rather than whichever flight leaves Heathrow at the most convenient hour.

New York travellers should note that United's New York airport is Newark (EWR) in New Jersey, not JFK. See business class flights to New York for the city-level detail.

02 Three versions of United Polaris, and which aircraft carry them

United sells one business class, Polaris, but in 2026 you can end up in three noticeably different seats depending on the aircraft on your flight.

No door

Polaris (the established seat)

  • Fitted to United's Boeing 777-200, 777-300ER, 767-300ER, 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10 fleets.
  • 1-2-1 on the 777s and 787s, 1-1-1 on the 767 — every seat reaches the aisle directly.
  • Fully flat bed with Saks Fifth Avenue bedding.
  • Private and practical, but open at the aisle.
  • This is what most London services carry.
Sliding door

New Polaris suite (787-9 Elevated)

  • 56 suites on the new premium-heavy Boeing 787-9.
  • 19-inch 4K OLED screen with Bluetooth audio.
  • You can choose a window-facing or centre-facing position.
  • Sliding doors certified by the FAA in August 2026 and being unlocked aircraft by aircraft.
  • London services: San Francisco now; Houston scheduled from 5 January 2027.
Sliding door

Polaris Studio

  • Eight larger suites at the front of the same 787-9 cabin.
  • 27-inch 4K OLED screen, the largest United says any US carrier fits.
  • Ottoman with a seatbelt in six of the eight, so a companion can dine with you.
  • Extra catering and ground handling on top of Polaris.
  • Sold as a paid seat choice on a Polaris ticket, per flight.

The honest summary: the older Polaris seat is a good business class that lacks a door, not a bad one. You still lie flat and still walk straight out to the aisle. United's own target is at least 30 of the new 787-9s flying by the end of 2027, so the share of door-equipped London flights should rise, but through 2026 it is limited to a handful of services.

03 How to know which Polaris seat you will get before paying

A route name is not enough. "San Francisco to London has the new suites" is true today, but the aircraft is attached to the flight number, and United has also flown some of these planes on routes for a single season only.

  1. Quote by flight number. The new 787-9 is scheduled on named United flight numbers. A different flight on the same day and the same route can be a different aircraft.
  2. Check the seat map for the Studio block. A standard 1-2-1 map looks much the same on old and new aircraft. Eight larger seats at the very front, followed by 56 Polaris suites, is the signature of the new 787-9.
  3. Ask about the door separately. Doors on the new aircraft were locked at launch and are being activated gradually after certification. New deliveries should arrive with them working, but an earlier airframe may still be catching up.
  4. Check your fare tier. On a Basic Polaris fare, choosing a seat in advance costs extra. If you want a particular window or a centre pair for two, a Standard fare may be the simpler buy.
  5. Accept that swaps happen. Nobody can promise an airframe months ahead. We tell you what is scheduled and re-check it closer to departure.

Polaris Studio is not a fare you can buy on its own. It is a seat you add to a Polaris ticket, for each flight. If a quote says "Studio" without a flight number and a seat assignment, nothing has been confirmed.

04 Flying United from Heathrow, Edinburgh and Glasgow

Heathrow Terminal 2 is United's main UK base, with daily flights to all seven hubs. Scotland has its own nonstops, which is unusual for a US airline and genuinely useful if you live north of the border.

  • London Heathrow (T2): Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco and Washington Dulles. United's flights leave from the 2B satellite.
  • Edinburgh: Newark year-round, Washington Dulles almost year-round and up to daily, and Chicago O'Hare as a summer seasonal service.
  • Glasgow: a daily summer service to Newark, running from May to 24 October in 2026, flown by a Boeing 737 MAX 8.

Be clear-eyed about Glasgow. The 737 MAX 8 is a single-aisle aircraft and it does not carry a Polaris cabin, so there is no lie-flat bed on that flight. It is a convenient way across the Atlantic, but it is not the product this guide is about. From Edinburgh, we confirm the aircraft on your date before we treat the flight as a Polaris booking.

From Manchester, Birmingham or elsewhere in England, United has no nonstop of its own. You can make your own way to Heathrow, or look at a carrier that flies from your local airport. We will tell you when the second option is simply the better journey.

05 Lounges at Heathrow and at the United hubs

There is no Polaris lounge in the UK. At Heathrow, United uses the United Club in the Terminal 2B satellite, which is also open to Star Alliance Gold members and passengers in the premium cabins of other Star Alliance airlines. It has showers and a long bar, and is the right place to eat before a daytime westbound flight.

On the way back, Heathrow is where United does something distinctive: there is an arrivals lounge in Terminal 2 for eligible United Polaris passengers landing in the morning, with shower suites. After an overnight flight from the US into a working day in London, that is worth knowing about. Eligibility conditions apply, so we check them for your flight.

At the US end, United runs Polaris lounges at six hubs:

Polaris lounges at the hubs United flies to from London, at the time of writing.
HubPolaris lounge
Chicago O'Hare (ORD)Yes
Houston (IAH)Yes
Los Angeles (LAX)Yes
Newark (EWR)Yes
San Francisco (SFO)Yes
Washington Dulles (IAD)Yes
Denver (DEN)Planned, not open

Polaris lounges are built for passengers departing on long-haul Polaris flights, so they matter most on the way home. The important catch arrived in April 2026: a Basic Polaris fare does not include Polaris lounge entry, only the United Club. If a proper meal and a quiet room before the overnight flight are part of why you are buying business class, buy the Standard tier.

06 MileagePlus, Star Alliance and why Avios does not apply

United is a founding member of Star Alliance, set up in 1997 with Air Canada, Lufthansa, SAS and Thai. Its own loyalty programme is MileagePlus.

For a UK traveller, the practical point is that United sits in a different alliance from British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. Avios, BA's currency, belongs to oneworld and does not earn on a United ticket in the usual way. If you collect with a Star Alliance programme, such as Lufthansa Group's Miles & More or another member scheme, a United flight can usually earn into it, subject to that programme's rules and your fare.

The fare tier matters here too. Under the April 2026 changes, Basic Polaris earns MileagePlus miles at a reduced rate and does not count flights towards Premier status, only the points element. If status is part of why you fly United, Basic is the wrong tier to pick.

Star Alliance Gold members get into the United Club at Heathrow regardless of cabin. That is a real benefit if you connect onto United from another Star airline, but it does not open the Polaris lounges in the US, which are tied to the ticket, not the status card.

07 United against the airlines you are realistically comparing

From London to the US, the realistic comparison is United against British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, on the city pairs where they overlap. None of them is uniformly best; each has a different weak spot.

How the three compare on what decides a transatlantic business booking. Verified at the time of writing; fleets and schedules change.

United's case is strongest when your final city is one of its hubs or a short hop beyond one, or when you want to fly from Edinburgh. It is weakest when a competitor's newest seat flies your city pair and United's does not. The newest United seat is currently scheduled only on its San Francisco flights, and from January 2027 on Houston, so for most other hubs you are comparing the older Polaris against the rival's current product.

08 What a United Polaris fare from the UK actually depends on

There is no single United business class price, and the headline number is now less comparable than it used to be. Since April 2026, the same Polaris seat can be sold as Basic, Standard or Flexible, and they are different products.

  • Fare tier. Basic removes free seat selection, the second checked bag, changes, Polaris lounge entry and most of the loyalty value. Standard adds those back and allows changes; Flexible adds refunds.
  • Whether you want Polaris Studio. It is charged per flight on top of the ticket, so a return with Studio both ways pays it twice.
  • Hub or beyond. A nonstop to a hub and a journey through it to another city are priced differently.
  • Dates and season. Moving a day or two is often the biggest single lever on a transatlantic business fare.
  • Booking window. Premium fares rarely fall reliably close to departure.

When we compare United against another airline, we compare like with like: tier against tier, with the seat, bags and lounge you actually want included. If we quote you a number, it is one we can ticket on those dates. Bookings we ticket are ATOL protected where the scheme applies (ATOL Protected).

FAQ United Airlines Business Class: your questions answered

These are the questions UK travellers actually ask us about United Airlines. Every answer here also appears in here's structured data, word for word.

United calls its long-haul business class United Polaris. On the newest Boeing 787-9s there is also Polaris Studio, a larger seat at the front of the same cabin that is sold as a paid seat choice on top of a Polaris ticket rather than as a separate class.

United flies from Heathrow Terminal 2 to its seven hubs: Chicago O'Hare, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco and Washington Dulles. Other US cities are reached by connecting at one of those hubs.

Only on the new Boeing 787-9s with United's Elevated interior. The FAA certified the sliding doors in August 2026 and United is unlocking them aircraft by aircraft, so availability can still vary. Older Polaris seats on other aircraft have no door.

The new 787-9 flies the daily San Francisco to Heathrow services, with a third summer frequency that runs until 24 October 2026. United has scheduled it on Houston to Heathrow from 5 January 2027. Aircraft swaps happen, so we confirm the flight number before you pay.

Yes on the widebody aircraft that carry Polaris. The 777s and 787s use a 1-2-1 layout and the 767-300ER uses 1-1-1, so every seat reaches the aisle directly. The seasonal Glasgow to Newark 737 MAX 8 has no Polaris cabin at all.

Since April 2026 United has been rolling out three Polaris fare tiers: Basic, Standard and Flexible. Basic requires paid seat selection, includes one checked bag instead of two, allows no changes, gives United Club rather than Polaris lounge access and earns reduced miles.

No. At Heathrow United uses the United Club in the Terminal 2B satellite for departures. There is an arrivals lounge at Heathrow Terminal 2 for eligible United Polaris passengers arriving in the morning, with showers, which is useful after an overnight flight.

Chicago O'Hare, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco and Washington Dulles have Polaris lounges. Denver has one planned but none open at the time of writing. Basic Polaris fares do not include Polaris lounge entry.

United flies Edinburgh to Newark year-round, Edinburgh to Washington almost year-round and Edinburgh to Chicago in summer. The summer Glasgow to Newark service uses a Boeing 737 MAX 8 without lie-flat seats, so check the aircraft before booking a premium seat from Scotland.

Not in the usual way. United is a Star Alliance member and its programme is MileagePlus, whereas Avios belongs to oneworld airlines such as British Airways. You can earn and redeem on United through Star Alliance partner programmes, subject to each programme's rules.

Yes, and we build journeys that way by default. On one through ticket a delay is the responsibility of the airline and you are rebooked, usually with a hotel. On two separate bookings a missed connection is yours, at your own cost. Where splitting genuinely saves enough to be worth it, we will show you both and say plainly what risk you would be taking on.

We can tell you the scheduled aircraft and how stable that rotation has been, and we re-check closer to departure. What nobody can promise is that an aircraft is never substituted. On United Airlines the difference that matters is the cabin you are picturing against the one that actually flies, so we confirm it in writing on the quote rather than leaving you to read a seat map.

Yes. If a nonstop on another carrier gets you there in less time, or a different airline is materially cheaper on your dates, we will say so even though it means not selling you United Airlines. A booking that disappoints costs us more than a fare we did not write.

Your dates, your nearest UK airport, where you are going and who is travelling. Anything that constrains the trip helps too — a fixed meeting at the far end, a preference for a nonstop, or a specific cabin you have set your heart on. Call 07862 620009.
